Small diameter implants, also called mini dental implants, are relatively new to dentistry. Mini implants were first used over 30 years ago by Dr. Victor Sendax in New York, when a prominent opera singer broke off a front tooth the day before a performance. Having no other quick solutions, he used a stainless steel screw normally used as a post in root canals and simply screwed it into the bone and attached a plastic tooth to it. It worked, so he decided to patent the procedure.
We have come a long way since then. Both mini implants and conventional implants are now constructed from medical grade titanium similar to what is used for hip and knee replacements. Mini implants have been researched and used widely now for over 10 years all over the world.
